Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know before going solar.

Cost depends on system size, type (on-grid, off-grid or hybrid) and components. A typical residential on-grid system is priced per kilowatt, and batteries add to the cost for off-grid and hybrid systems. Use our savings calculator for a rough estimate, then request a free site survey for an exact quote.

In Kerala, 1 kW of solar typically generates about 4 units (kWh) per day, or roughly 120 units per month. Divide your average monthly consumption by 120 to get an approximate size — a home using 300 units a month usually needs around 2.5–3 kW.

Plan for roughly 80–100 sq. ft. of shade-free roof area per kW. Concrete, sheet and tiled roofs can all be used with the right mounting structure.

Residential households installing grid-connected rooftop solar can claim central financial assistance under PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana — up to ₹78,000 for systems of 3 kW and above. See our subsidy page for details and we will guide you through the application.

With net metering, KSEB installs a bi-directional meter. Surplus solar energy you export to the grid is credited against the energy you draw at night or on cloudy days, so you only pay for the net consumption.

Yes. Panels still generate on cloudy days, though at reduced output. Systems are sized on annual average generation, so sunnier months make up for the monsoon. On-grid systems draw from the grid when needed; hybrid and off-grid systems use batteries.

No. For safety, on-grid inverters shut down when the grid fails. If you need power during outages, choose a hybrid or off-grid system with battery backup.

Very little. Rinse the panels with plain water every few weeks to remove dust and bird droppings, and keep the area around the inverter ventilated. We provide after-sales support whenever you need service.

Quality solar modules are designed to keep generating for 25 years or more, with gradual reduction in output over time. Inverters and batteries have shorter lifespans and may need replacement during that period.

Once the design is finalised and materials are ready, most residential installations are completed within a few days. Net-metering approval from KSEB may take additional time.
